It wasn't out of fear, but experience. I was in the clinic when he made the post, and spoke to him in person. He felt he could do better, because he knew, and probably had done so at some point.

The Doctor is the one where there's two of them, right? I've wanted to learn more, but many conversations on the network cut off. What I do know is that he has many friends who are both loyal and very protective of the Doctor. By his character, I've judged him as one that likes to play hero, running away from many things, and also acts like a child with his fascination towards everything. I don't know about trust, but there is a distinct probability of danger. It's unknown if the Doctor had also learned and trained the ability to control others, but he also might not need it most of the time.
